   HFD Street Machines News

Several members of the HFD Street Machines  will be showing their cars/trucks at the 32nd Annual Corvette/Chevy Expo on March 20 & 21, 2010 at the George R. Brown Convention Center.  We will feature the 1954 Chevrolet Handyman Delivery Wagon that was once used by the Houston Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.  The "Coffee Wagon" as it was referred to, was originally donated to the HFD in 1954 by KNAPP CHEVROLET, located on the corner of Washington Ave. @ Houston Ave. in downtown Houston.  The vehicle has only 4000 original miles but needs to be restored.  Anyone interested in assisting in with the restoration should contact:

Kenny Jarvis, Captain * Fire Station 68 "B" * 713-777-1060 * kenneth.jarvis@cityofhouston.net

Angela Rayne, Executive Director * Houston Fire Museum * 2403 Milam St. * Houston, Tx. 77006                                713-524-2526

f you or a friend are looking for a car, truck, bike or parts for your ride, check out the Swap Meet page.  There are several outstanding muscle cars and custom hotrods for sale.  People are always wanting to buy/sell motors, tranny's, interior parts...you name it.  If you have something you want to sell, send a couple of pics and some detailed info and I'll galdly list it for you on the Swap Meet page.  Here's an example of just one of the rides For Sale:

Check this out

A friend emailed a link to one of the coolest websites I've seen yet.  The site contains brochures for virutally every year, make and model car ever produced in the USA.  There are some extra added attrations on the site as well, such as ads/brochures for wheels, tires, motor oil and spark plugs, just to name a few.  Check it out at  American Auto Brochures
You won't be disappointed.

Hotrod Projects and New Owner's

Several HFD members are using the winter months to start and/or complete their hotrod projects.

* Update (1/25/2010) - David McDonald's '68 Nova is back from the paint shop.  He chose PPG - Root Beer Brown for the color.  Paint was shop by Ron Munoz of East Bernard, Texas.  (pics) The 396 ci. Rat is ready to install.  Stay tuned, this is going to be a "Bad" Nova.

* Adolfo Esquivel and his father are rebuilding a '53 GMC 5 window pickup.  The build sheet calls for a Big Block Chevy.  This old truck resembles an exploded view of a '53 pickup in the GMC Builder's Manual.  If it's rusted or bent, it's getting new steel.  Adolfo can paint too!  Watch this 'ol truck as it comes together.

* Doug Barber should have his '73 Camaro completed by Spring.  The car is beautiful.  He's still waiting for some a/c parts to be delivered.

* Ricky "Mr. Limpet" Higgins is making room for his '72 Cuda.  The residents in the area of the storage facility are tired of smelling the "dead fish."  Ricky is feeling the pressure from the rest of the members to get the car going.  If not, we may be eating blackened Cuda for dinner.

* Update (1/25/2010) Lin Harris is changing the stance of  his '69 Chevy Fleetside.  He's doing a 4" - 6" drop and has new Intro wheels are in and look great!  The front end is done.  The bed has been removed, the frame is being cleaned, parts for the back-half of the chassis are en route to the powder coat shop.  The engine compartment is also taking on a new look.  Paint is coming soon but.......first-things-first.

* Update (1/25/2010) Scott Grant took his '72 Buick Skylark out on her maiden voyage yesterday. Up next for the project will be paint.  The car, when complete, will be a GS Clone.

* Steve Sharp and son just bought '54 Chevy 5 window and, judging by the pics he emailed, they've got a good one.  I vote for a Blown Mouse Motor.

* Update (1/25/2010) Jim and Megan Nestor are working on a '68 Mustang Coupe.  The car is in very good shape and is home to a 200 c.i. 6 cylinder.  The interior has been refurbished and the car is running great.  Now it's time to teach the young lady to drive a standard transmission.

* Ken Bousquet is working on a '46 Ford Coupe.  I think it's some sort of top secret machine 'cuz he doesn't give much info on the progress.

* Anthony Tortorice brought his '67 GTO out to the Kendall Currie Benefit at Otto's.  Nice car!

There are other's working on projects, I just can't remember all of them.

This has, in my opinion, been an outstanding year for the HFD Street Machines.  We conducted 2 shows this year and raised over $25,000.00 total.  Every penny was donated to worthy causes.  We will hold our next show in late February or early March 2010.  Details will be sent out to everyone about the show and the charity organization we will support.

While we have had some success as a club, we also suffered some terrible losses.  On April 12, 2009, Easter Sunday, Captain James Harlow and Probationary Fire Fighter Damion Hobbs were Killed in the Line of Duty while battling a house fire. We lost several Brother's to non-fire related accidents as well.  My thoughts and prayers go out to all of my Brother's and Sister's.

God Bless and keep you all safe.

See ya at the next show!

Daughter resurrects father's classic 1962 Chevy Vette

By HEIDI VAN HORNE

WHAT can warm my motor more than a father-son classic car story?

A father-daughter classic car story, of course.

Jen Keffeler's father, Captain Stephen Richards, was a Marine Top Gun pilot when he purchased this 1962 Corvette in 1971, the same year Jen was born.

Having rescued it from the drag strip, her father drove them around in it everywhere and while she can barely remember those very early times, the smell of the car itself puts her back in the moment immediately.

The car was in an accident in 1974, which left it parked in the family garage for many years. As a child, Keffeler would dust off the Vette and promise it that some day she would fix it up like it deserved.

Years turned into decades, and as fate would have it, a natural disaster would have to happen to bring that restoration to fruition. In 2004, Hurricane Ivan hit Pensacola, Fla., with record-breaking waves and force, and Jen's parents' home on Santa Rosa Sound, directly behind Pensacola Bay, was submerged in 12 feet of saltwater.

Instead of conceding that Ivan's surge had turned the Corvette into scrap, Jen and her husband Steve decided to bring a modern update to their classic car. From there the restoration began, and, as Jen said, “We just made her fun to drive while keeping that classic look.”

The “Fuelie” fuel-injection version with 360 horsepower was the 1962 Vette's — last of the C1 series — original engine, and her father had installed a '70 LT1 engine after purchasing the car. Once Jen and Steve brought the Vette back to Texas after the hurricane to begin the rebuild, they started with a custom frame from Corvette Correction that utilizes Corvette C-4 hardware, capable of housing GM's 6.0-liter LS-2 fuel-injected engine.

Custom Upholstery was done by Ron Mangus' Custom Auto Interiors and the complete paint work was done by Randy Borcherding of PaintHouseTexas.com, giving it this custom “Dark Pearl Maroondy” shade.

Two other modernized classic Chevy beauties I'm showing off are both owned by Glenn Bennett. Bennett's 1951 Chevy five-window pickup is a dependable old truck with new technology and the rebuild was done by Bennett himself, taking four years to complete and finishing just one week before 9-11.

It has a custom frame, and is running a 1991 TPI 350. Even eight years after the restoration, Bennett said it runs great and gets attention everywhere it goes.

Bennett also owns a 1965 Chevrolet El Camino. He wanted one of these since he was 16 years old, so it's no surprise it was among the rebuilds he set out to do for himself. This one taking three years to complete, it also has new technology and a modern update to the vintage ride. Under the hood it has a 2002 Corvette LS1, inside it sports leather interior, and outside is an all-new clean black paint job.

This one he describes simply, “fast and fun.”

Classic 1960s muscle machines restored, upgraded by owners
 By HEIDI VAN HORNE

IT'S all late-1960's muscle this week in Heidi's Pics, as I bring you two tough readers' rides from the era. Both beautiful machines were completely restored by their owners, with the majority of work done in their own garages.

First is Richard Gutierrez's 1969 Plymouth Barracuda. It now has a high-performance 340 V-8 engine, 727 transmission, and front disc brakes. Gutierrez has owned the car for 32 years, having bought it in 1977 for a mere $300. He spent three years restoring it himself in his garage to get it to the pristine condition it is in now.

The next reader's ride is Russell Harris' 1967 Chevrolet Camaro coupe. This, too, was restored by the owner in his garage. Harris did everything right there at home with the exception of the paint and body work. He estimates that the project took about five years and approximately $25,000 to complete.

Some of the upgrades include new floor pans, front clip, rear quarter panels and a smoothed firewall. He had everything from the frame to the firewall, roof and floor pan powder coated black and painted Chevrolet Victory Red with black SS stripes. It has a 355-c.i.d. Chevy V-8 engine with a TH350 automatic transmission. Inside the car, the interior is black and features Procar Rally Series 1000 seats, as well as a Covan gauge panel with Autometer American Platinum gauges and a Lokar shifter.

Russell is a proud Houston firefighter and a member of the HFD Street Machines Car Club www.hfdstreetmachines.com. Consisting of cars, trucks and vehicles of all types and eras, this cool car club is for Houston firefighters who also are car aficionados. In addition to many more classic Chevy's like Harris' — such as Impalas, Novas, Chevelles and pickups — the club has members with rides as varied as an early model Thunderbird, a new Viper, a classic Bronco, modern trucks, a vintage Challenger, late-model Charger, lots of stellar hot rods and, of course, a few vintage fire trucks — with a couple from the early 1900s.

It's a great group of people who work hard and enjoy playing with cars in their down time. It is fun to see how inclusive a club it is for such different types of vehicles. There are even motorcycles in the club, as well. Look for me to do more features on rides from members of this club — and look for a special column from me here soon about vintage fire trucks.

Russell is friends with someone whose car was recently featured here in my “Heidi's Pics” column. The friend suggested Russell submit his Camaro to me, and now here it is, featured in my column. So, if you know a friend with a remarkable classic or custom vehicle, let them know about “Heidi's Pics” and tell them to send in photos with their car's story. They just might end up a featured reader's ride!
